The Patron Saint of Farmers, Isadore, felt the envy of his fellow workers, showing up late to work most days. The other workers reported his behavior and the owner followed the pious farmer one morning, only to find him drawn to the music of the local chapel, kneeling in prayer for hours at a time.

The jealous co-workers did not understand how Isadore could be both at the chapel and completing his work in the fields each day. Rumors of sightings of angels assisting Isadore in completing his tasks began to circulate.

Memorial Day: Wreaths Across America

As Memorial Day approaches, local volunteers are preparing for a date in December, National Wreaths Across America Day.

In an effort to ensure that all veterans laid to rest at Gallup cemeteries are honored on that day, fundraising has begun and will continue through Nov. 31.

Any two $15 wreaths sponsored through the sponsorship groups listed below will be matched with one wreath from Wreaths Across America.

The goal for the upcoming national Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 18 is to place a wreath at the headstone of every veteran and spread patriotism and commemoration for the sacrifices they made for the country.

Gallup High SPECIAL ED TEACHER HAILED AS MOTHERLY

Camille’s Sidewalk Café selects a teacher every month to be recognized and celebrated from within the Gallup area. Nominees are selected based on votes from students and their families on how and why they feel their teacher deserves the award of  “Teacher of the Month.”

Louella Manlegro, a special education teacher at Gallup High School, received the honor this month. She spoke with the Gallup Sun about why she loves teaching students with special needs, how she got interested in a career in the classroom, and life in her native country, the Philippines.

Libraries across the country were shuttered last March when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. While the country is gradually reopening, some libraries remain closed due to their state’s restrictions.

The Octavia Fellin Public Library, 115 W. Hill Ave., is one of them. In-person visits are still temporarily suspended and the library continues to provide curbside checkout services instead.
