Building Nations commemorates Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a horse ride

Building Nations LLC is promoting a 34-plus mile horse ride to honor the cultures and histories of Indigenous tribes across the country.

Riders will take a horseback ride over a 34-mile route starting at Cornerstone Ministry Center in Smith Lake, 1299 N.M. Hwy. 371, and travel westbound to Rehoboth Christian School, 211 Tse Yaaniichi St.

The second Monday in October is the date set for Indigenous Peoples’ Day in New Mexico. That will fall on Oct. 11.

The date was declared as Indigenous Peoples’ Day by the Gallup City Council in September 2016; by the McKinley County Commission in October 2017. In April 2019 it became an official state holiday.

Southern rock band headlines ArtsCrawl’s return

ArtsCrawl is coming back in a big way after taking a year and a half off due to the pandemic.

Rhonda Quintana, the event’s coordinator, has big plans for the opening ArtsCrawl, which is set for Oct. 9. One of those big plans is bringing in a Southern rock band called Christopher Shayne from Phoenix, Ariz.

The band is called Christopher Shayne, and Quintana said their popularity is growing. One of their music videos, “NiceRide,” has 1.6 million views on YouTube, and they have almost 6,000 followers on Instagram.

Gallupian honored by NMSU

Sammy Chioda was honored as the Distinguished Alumni Selection for New Mexico State University Business College over the weekend of Sept. 25-26.

Chioda is a 1976 graduate and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics and Accounting from NMSU.

In its acknowledgment of his career, NMSU noted he is often referred to as “Mr. Gallup,” and is in his 53rd year of broadcasting in Gallup as president of Millennium Media, Inc.

He has also been active in the Gallup Rotary, Gallup McKinley County Chamber of Commerce and served as the voice of the Gallup High School Bengals for 40 years, as well as being the driving force behind establishing the Tony Dorsett youth football...
