Runners stayed in a pack while running in honor of fallen officers May 17.

Running to honor six fallen officers who paid with their lives while serving the public, showing that officers never forget their fallen, such as GPD Officer Louis Silva, who died in 1930 and continues to be honored for his service and ultimate sacrifice.

It took all first responder departments to make the fallen officers memorial a success in 2022.

Glenn’s Bakery donated a cake to honor fallen police officers, and uplift the current ranks in attendance at the Gallup Police Dept.’s annual memorial event at Larry Brian Mitchell Center May 17.

Chance encounter leads woman on a business-helping path

A chance encounter at a local coffee shop led Sydney Smolla to a career opportunity she didn’t see coming. Smolla is a small business owner, and the barista knew she was looking for clients, so he set her up with Gallup’s Tourism and Marketing manager Jennifer Lazarz.

Smolla moved to Gallup in November after marrying her husband, who works as a pharmacist for the Gallup Indian Medical Center.

Thanks to that chance encounter, Smolla is now working for the city and helping with the Coal Avenue Commons project. She serves as the liaison between business owners, the community, and the construction company to ensure...

Students learn importance of financial planning

After a nearly three-year hiatus a signature youth empowerment event reminded students at Gallup Central High School about the importance of financial planning.

On April 22, students convened in the school’s gymnasium to participate in the $pending Frenzy, an interactive simulation designed to introduce budgeting, consumer awareness, and independent living to teens and young adults.

The $pending Frenzy featured community volunteers who staffed businesses such as a bank, grocery store, realty office, and auto dealer where students made purchases using play money. It’s been an annual event at Central High for nearly 10 years...

Cultural Center reset: New creations support new creativity

The Gallup Cultural Center is getting a top-to-bottom refresh that will see new programs and classes this summer, along with building repairs and the return of Indian dances three nights a week.

The old Santa Fe Depot that houses the Cultural Center has gotten a major spring cleaning: painting, repairs and the addition of a new arena for Indian dances. The dances will be presented at 7 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the summer.

“We’re expanding on dances, artwork, history and just public relations to get people to come to our city and the Gallup Cultural Center in a way that showcases us as uniquely Gallup,” Director Teri Fraiser said.
