WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — During a special session held on Dec. 16, the 25th Navajo Nation Council voted 13 in favor and six opposed supporting Legislation No. 0242-24, an action to remove Ethel Branch as the Navajo Nation Attorney General.

Legislation 0242-24, sponsored by Law and Order Committee Chair Eugenia Charles-Newton, was passed as part of a consent agenda, without any discussion from the Council.

The Attorney General is appointed by the Navajo Nation President and confirmed by the Navajo Nation Council. In accordance with Title II of the Navajo Nation Code, the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General serve at the pleasure of the Council.

Title II states, “the Deputy Attorney General shall serve in the stead of the Attorney General, with full authority of the Attorney General, in the event of the death, disability, or removal of the Attorney General, until a new Attorney General is approved by the Navajo Nation Council.”
