SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed bills into law that will help address New Mexico’s need for housing and infrastructure, including roads, bridges, water and broadband on Feb. 28.

“These bills are going to make a huge difference in the state’s ability to take advantage of every dollar when it comes to infrastructure opportunities,” she said in a press release.

TSE BONITO, New Mexico — The 25th Navajo Nation Council met with U.S. Congressman Joseph Morelle, D-NY, to discuss concerns and recommendations regarding voting and elections issues to build the congressional record in support of the Native American Voting Rights Act on Feb. 19.

Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley (Tachee/Blue Gap, Many Farms, Nazlini, Tselani/Cottonwood, Low Mountain) provided testimony that focused on areas of geographic distance, language and institutional barriers, and socio-economic realities. Curley discussed how issues like public transportation, rural addressing, and out of precinct voting have impacted Navajo voters.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — In coordination with the Navajo Nation Election Administration and the Judicial Branch, Lester Yazzie took his Oath of Office at the Navajo Nation Supreme Court to serve as the interim Council Delegate for District 6 (Baahaali, Chilchiltah, Manuelito, Red Rock, Rock Springs, Tsayatoh) on Feb. 14.

Yazzie will replace former Council Delegate Seth Damon who resigned on Jan. 22 to take a position as the Deputy Secretary of the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department.

Legislature approves much of Governor’s agenda

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Legislature adjourned its 30-day session on Feb. 15 having passed much of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s legislative agenda.

However, the governor is seriously considering a special session to press for additional public safety protections that New Mexicans demand. Lawmakers approved a $10.2 billion budget for FY 2025, a 6.8% increase over current-year state spending.
