Toulouse Oliver to take over as SOS this month

Maggie Toulouse Oliver will take over the Secretary of State’s office on Dec. 9, according to a release from Brad Winter, the current Secretary of State.

She will be sworn into office on that day.

Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat, won election to the position this November over Republican Nora Espinoza.

Winter became Secretary of State after Gov. Susana Martinez appointed him last December after the resignation of Dianna Duran. Duran resigned shortly before pleading guilty to multiple crimes, including felonies, related to misuse of her campaign funds.

State auditor initiates special audit to review tax underpayments

SANTA FE – State Auditor Tim Keller announced Nov. 30 that the Office of the State Auditor outlined a plan for the resolution of longstanding questions about revenue collection at the Office of the Superintendent of Insurance.

The plan includes the initiation of an in-depth audit, to be conducted by an independent firm, to determine amounts that may be owed to the state. The plan also includes recommendations for multiagency coordination for oversight of the audit findings and responsibilities for any settlement claims.

Poll shows Clinton leading Trump by 10 in NM

A recently released poll shows Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by double digits in New Mexico, up from a five percent lead last month in a survey from that same survey.

Both results comes from ZiaPoll, a pollster based in New Mexico. ZiaPoll provided NM Political Report with the full results of a poll conducted on the final day of voter registration in New Mexico and a previous poll conducted two weeks earlier.

The poll conducted on Oct. 11 shows 46 percent of likely voters in New Mexico backing Clinton compared to 36 percent who say they would vote for Trump. Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson received the backing of 12 percent, while 2 percent said they preferred Green...

Martinez signs two budget bills from special session

SANTA FE – Gov. Susana Martinez signed two budget bills that the Legislature passed during the recent, contentious special session.

One of those bills will move money from various funds to the general fund to pay for the budget deficit for both the fiscal year that ended in June and the current fiscal year. The bulk of that money comes from the tobacco settlement permanent fund.

Martinez signed the bill without any line-item vetoes.
