WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On July 15, the 25th Navajo Nation Council will convene at the capital of the Navajo Nation to commence the opening day of the 2024 Summer Council Session.
“On behalf of the 25th Navajo Nation Council, we welcome all visitors to the People’s House to listen and participate in the 2024 Summer Council Session," 25th Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley said. "As we consider legislations that impact our people and the Nation, the 25th Navajo Nation Council continues to set the course of history for the Navajo People. The Council leads with compassion and wisdom in making decisions that will benefit our communities for generations to come."
In a time-honored tradition, Council Delegates have gathered with their community members to journey on horseback to the Council Chamber in Window Rock. Along the way, they’re discussing issues with their constituents, and bringing their community concerns and recommendations to the Council Chamber.
On July 15 at 8:30 am, the riders will leave the fairground and make their way to the 25th Navajo Nation Council Chamber for the start of the Summer Session.
Council Delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty will join Dave and Darlene Peshlakai to lead an “Angels vs. Drunk Drivers” awareness walk against drunk driving on the Navajo Nation. The Peshlakai's lost their two daughters, Del Lynn, 19, and DeShauna, 17, to drunk driving 14 years ago in a tragic car crash. The walk will also begin from the Window Rock fairgrounds at 8 am on July 15.
The Apache County Sheriffs will serve as the Color Guard for the opening day of the Summer Session and 2023-2024 Little Miss Ceremonial Snowflake Blackwell will provide the Pledge of Allegiance. Broken Arrow Bible Ranch Director Ty Platero will provide the invocation.
Curley welcomes the public to attend the opening day of the Summer Session in-person or to watch online. The Office of the Speaker encourages everyone to exercise courtesy in accommodating the elderly who are in attendance. The Summer Session will be broadcast live on the Navajo Nation Council’s YouTube channel at @NavajoNationCouncil.
