‘Logan’ delivers a darker, grimmer X-men story

Rating: ««« out of 4 stars

Running Time: 137 min.

It has been quite a run for Hugh Jackman in one of his most memorable roles as the X-Men superhero, Wolverine. Logan, which marks his ninth onscreen appearance as Wolverine, is by far the darkest tale for the character. Perhaps encouraged by the R-rated hit, Deadpool, the filmmakers have been allowed to go down a more adult path (if you consider dropping more f-bombs and adding graphic violence mature). Regardless, this is still a strong movie, bolstered by some solid performances and an attempt to deliver something a little different.

Rating: ««« out of 4 stars

Running Time: 105 min.

It looks as if the low-budget genre picture house Blumhouse Productions are on a bit of a roll. Last month’s Split has been an unqualified success at the box office and based on initial impressions, their latest release looks to make a memorable impression as well. Get Out combines elements of suspense, horror and dark satire. Written and directed by comedian Jordan Peele (Keanu), the story involves Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young African-American photographer who receives an...

This time out, the protagonist teams up with his old friend to rob a charitable foundation on Christmas Eve. Despite his nasty attitude, one of his sweet-natured old acquaintances begins to draw out the sensitive side in the curmudgeon. Critics were not impressed with this sequel, complaining...

‘A Cure for Wellness’ is a crazed fever dream

Rating: ««« out of 4 stars

Running Time: 146 min.

Holy cow. Simply put, the new film A Cure For Wellness is completely bonkers. It’s a horror/thriller that ends up playing out like some sort of fever dream. In fact, for a good portion of the film one might think that the storyteller was just making things up as they were going along. Obviously, that couldn’t have been the case. For one, the production design is incredible and the movie is gorgeously shot. Yet it abandons conventional plotting and goes over the same story beats multiple times, often veering into wild exaggeration. One can’t help but think that the movie itself is as mad as some of its characters.
