TASK FORCE MAKES 13 DRUG, WARRANT ARESTS IN DOWNTOWN GALLUPCleaning up the streets

After multiple community forums where Gallup citizens voiced their concerns about public safety issues in the community, the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, Gallup Police Department, and the FBI joined forces and created a drug task force to patrol the streets of Gallup.

“Based on the crime forum meetings the community’s been having over the last few months, my office is working with the Gallup Police Department to put together a task force to address the particular issues that we’re struggling with, i.e. property crimes, fentanyl use, and more specifically fentanyl use in public areas,” McKinley County Sheriff James Maiorano III explained.

The task force operates as an overtime opportunity for any law enforcement officer who is interested in participating. Maiorano said so far all of his officers have agreed to do it when asked.

MCSO, GPD, and the FBI coordinate what days they want to run a task force operation. Recently, law enforcement officers patrolled Downtown Gallup on Sept. 6 and found multiple people with fentanyl and methamphetamine on them. They also made arrests for outstanding warrants. Two people were caught with large amounts of fentanyl on them, and they were charged with trafficking narcotics.

Mairoano said the three law enforcement agencies plan to perform task force operations frequently in the future.
