GFD rescues people involved in I-40 crash

A semi-truck collided with a SUV on I-40 on June 24.

Crew C of the Gallup Fire Department responded to Interstate 40 near the 20 mile marker after the crash. When they arrived, they found the semi on its side with the driver trapped inside. The truck was blocking multiple lanes of traffic.

A tan Pontiac Bonneville crashed into a metal guard near a local gas station, eventually leading to the driver, Ernest Clah, 36, of Gallup, being arrested for his third DWI.

Gallup Officer Christopher Dawes was dispatched to the Allsups store at 2857 W. Hwy. 66 after a call pertaining to the vehicle crash came into Metro Dispatch. Dawes arrived at the scene and found a vehicle matching the caller’s description with front end damage that also fit the description.

Man threatens Pizza Hut employee with a knife

A man allegedly threatened to stab a Pizza Hut employee because he thought the man had pulled a gun on him.

On June 7, around 6:15 pm, Gallup Police Officer Jarad Albert was dispatched to Duke City, 5012 E. Hwy. 66, after a man named Junior Cornfield reportedly assaulted another man with a knife.

According to Albert’s report, the victim called Metro Dispatch and said Cornfield, 38, was wearing a camouflage jacket with gray pants when he pulled a knife on him and tried to stab him. The victim said he last saw the man walking toward Albertsons on Aztec Avenue.

Cornfield was found by police around 6:45 pm with a knife matching the victim’s description in his pants pocket.

Fatal crash in McKinley County

An Oklahoma man has died after a pickup truck rolled over onto Six Mile Canyon Road.

On June 10, around 10:15 am, the New Mexico State Police investigated the fatal crash involving a 2003 Chevy pickup truck on Interstate 40 and Six Mile Canyon Road, east of Gallup.

The initial investigation indicated that the truck was traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 around mile marker 39. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevy drove into the median, and rolled over onto Six Mile Canyon Road. Cesar Alfaro, 50, of McLoud, Okla., a passenger in the truck, was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Navajo man charged with assault

A man from Shiprock, Ariz., has been charged with assault after he threatened two people with a knife.

According to the indictment, on Oct 9, Harley Etcitty, a member of the Navajo Nation, assaulted two men with a knife.  One of the victims was seriously injured and had to be transferred to Flagstaff for a higher level of care. The other victim received multiple lacerations which required sutures.
