McKinley County Sheriff’s Office DWI Task Force Supervisor Tammy Houghtaling arrived at the five-mile marker on Hwy 265 in Blackhat in response to a request for backup by Deputy Josie Bowman. Bowman had arrived on scene to find a red Chevy Silverado in the ditch with its lights on and still in drive.

Jim, 42, was asleep in the driver’s seat. Houghtaling woke him and could smell alcohol on his breath. Jim’s eyes were bloodshot and watery. When he exited the truck he was unsteady, and he refused field sobriety tests. Jim blew .24 and .25 during breath testing.

Report: Edward Wright sexually abused his wife

A Gallup man jailed June 30 on sex and battery allegations bonded out of the McKinley County Adult Detention Center not long after being arrested, according to information from the MCADC.

Edward Wright, Jr., 40, was charged with criminal sexual penetration in the second degree and battery on a household member, an affidavit for arrest warrant states.

Deputy Jasmine Jaramillo of the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office is listed in the affidavit as the police official at the scene of the alleged assaults. The document states that the victim hesitated to come forward to authorities due to the nature of the crimes.

MCSO Deputy Merle Bates was working the DWI task force patrol at the intersection of Hamilton Road and U.S. 491 when he noticed a car traveling north at a fast pace. Bates caught up with the blue Pontiac at South China Springs Loop and U.S. 491. The vehicle was traveling at 80 mph.

Nelson, 25, had watery eyes, and the vehicle, which had three passengers and bore Arizona plates, smelled of alcohol. Nelson blew a .14 during the portable breath test and .11, twice, during breath testing at MCSO.

ROADSIDE DEATH

7/2, MENTMORE

McKinley County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Salina Brown was dispatched to the 14-mile marker on I-40, westbound, in reference to an accident. When she arrived at the scene, she found a semi truck off the north side road. In front of the truck, a red car, with a driver in the seat, was pushed against the right-of-way fence. The driver of the car, Douglas L. Hudson, 73, was declared deceased prior to Brown’s arrival.

Next-of-kin notification was completed by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.
