WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — The 25th Navajo Nation Council recognizes Navajo Nation Police Officer Day on May 10 and honors all the Navajo Nation Police Officers and their families for their courage, strength, and dedication to protecting the Navajo people.

"Every day, our Navajo Nation Police officers bravely risk their lives to safeguard our community," Speaker Crystalyne Curley said. "However, the shortage of manpower in law enforcement across the Navajo Nation means our officers must cover vast areas and shoulder an overwhelming workload. Despite these challenges, our officers have shown remarkable dedication and resilience. On this special day, we honor and pray for our officers including those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, along with their families."

In 2017, through resolution CO-64-17, the Navajo Nation Council declared the second Friday of May as “Navajo Police Officer Day.”

Law and Order Committee Chair Eugenia Charles-Newton, who advocates regularly at the federal level on behalf of all Navajo Nation Public Safety departments stated, “We urge Congress to take decisive action to address the pressing public safety crisis, gripping the Navajo Nation.”

She continued by parsing the Navajo Nation police officers.

“I commend the Navajo Nation Police Department for consistently facing the troubling surge of offenses that take place within our Nation, notably homicides and crimes against our children," Charles-Newton said. "In many situations, the current shortage of public safety resources severely hampers our ability to effectively combat crime. Our police officers step up every day to tackle these issues and we thank them for this. May God protect and bless our police officers."
