Ten students representing the Center for Career and Technical Education at UNM-Gallup went to Louisville, KY in June as delegates and competitors at the 51st National Leadership and Skills Conference sponsored by SkillsUSA.

The CCTE students are dually enrolled at UNM-Gallup and their individual high schools.  Participants competing at the national conference are:

• Tyler Johnson (Miyamura High School), Devin Spencer (Miyamura High School) and Roman Thomas (Gallup High School) – Welding Fabrication.

MINNEAPOLIS - The American Indian Cancer Foundation has named Deana Jackson (Navajo) to the foundation’s board of directors.

Jackson brings an impressive set of energy, passion, partnerships and skills to the board that will help AICAF, a national nonprofit, advance its mission of eliminating cancer and its impact on American Indian families.

TRD secretary named in investigation

SANTA FE–An investigation into the state Taxation and Revenue Department is implicating cabinet Secretary Demesia Padilla for alleged illegal behavior.

State Auditor Tim Keller recently revealed (http://nmpoliticalreport.com/6182/auditor-finds-possible-abuse-of-power-in-tax-and-rev/) that his office received a complaint in February that senior TRD officials gave a certain politically connected taxpayer preferential treatment. Part of the reason for the alleged preferential treatment centered around
how a cabinet level TRD official previously worked for this taxpayer.

President Begaye, Vice President Nez meet with U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs

WASHINGTON, D.C.—A veterans summit is in the works to bring together the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Navajo Veterans Affairs, congressional members, senators and most importantly, Navajo veterans seeking assistance.

The meeting is planned for autumn and will take place on the Navajo Nation, possibly during the Navajo Nation Fair.

That was the result of a July 8 meeting between Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye, Vice President Jonathan Nez and Stephanie Birdwell, Director of the Office of Tribal Government Relations for the VA.
