Navajo Technical University announced on April 17 that the highly competitive Udall Scholarship program awarded Counseling student Myka Jensen an Honorable Mention.

The Udall Undergraduate Scholarship honors the legacies of Morris and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of natural resources. The Udall Foundation recognizes students committed to careers in Native health care, including health care administration, social work, medicine, counseling, and research into health conditions affecting Native American communities. Over 400 students at over 150 universities applied for Udall Scholarships.

Jensen is the first NTU student to receive recognition from the Udall Foundation. He is pursuing a double major in Substance Abuse Counseling and Crisis Management. He plans to become a counselor and improve mental health outcomes within his community by providing culturally sensitive counseling services, including addressing challenges such as historical trauma, substance abuse, depression, and anxiety.

Throughout his academic journey, Jensen has demonstrated strong leadership and a deep-rooted passion for promoting well-being in his community. He performs volunteer work in the community and public schools, and his commitment to social responsibility has enriched the campus community and inspired his peers and instructors.

“We are thrilled to see Myka receive this well-deserved recognition,” Dr. Dianna Dekelaita-Mullet, NTU School of Arts and Humanities Department Head, said. ”His contributions to our university and his dedication to addressing the mental health needs and challenges in his community are commendable. This honor not only highlights his achievements but also reflects the values and mission of our university.”

The Udall Scholarship Honorable Mention is an esteemed recognition acknowledging Jensen’s potential to become a future leader in Native health care. This recognition opens doors to networking opportunities, mentorship, and further support for his academic and professional endeavors.
