ALBUQUERQUE – A man from Vanderwagen, N.M., has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after he reportedly hit two people with his car, killing them.

According to the indictment, on Oct. 2,  Sheldon Carlton Daye, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, allegedly hit and killed two people who were stopped on the shoulder of Highway 602, repairing a flat tire, near Bread Springs, N.M.  Daye, 29, was allegedly driving while under the influence at the time.

Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced that Daye was charged with involuntary manslaughter May 16. Daye will remain on conditions of release pending trial, which has not been scheduled.

An indictment is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, Daye faces up to eight years in prison.

The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Police Department and the New Mexico State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Alexander F. Flores is prosecuting the case.
