Kimberly Wells, President of Upsilon Chapter of Gallup, New Mexico of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, is pleased to announce the availability of a scholarship for a high school female senior who is interested in pursuing a teaching career.

This scholarship is named in honor of Mildred Holmes, a well-known teacher who taught in the Gallup McKinley County Schools. She was a very active member in the community and in Delta Kappa Gamma.

You will notice quite early in the new Disney cartoon movie Zootopia that it is doesn’t play much like a Disney cartoon movie at all. The Forever Used Disney Formula is pretty much gone; at least the songs are nixed and there isn’t a single princess to be found. Of course if you look deep enough the film still follows the 4 step template of: 1)Once upon a Time 2)The Plot Thickens 3)Time is Running Out and 4) They lived Happily Ever After- but so does just about every movie. Following the different beats set down by the last Disney Animation Studios film, Big Hero 6, Zootopia signifies a shift that is pretty profound.

Sometimes, despite your rational mind telling you that what you're watching is about as corny as they come, you still can't help but like a movie. Eddie the Eagle is one such example. This biopic of the goofy British ski-jumper is big, broad and lacks any kind of subtlety. Yet somehow it charms with its earnestness, resulting in a warm and inspirational tale of a young man refusing to let anything come in the way of achieving his dream.

A new contribution to a Gallup tradition

Artist Nani Chacon of Albuquerque was commissioned by COPE to paint a mural beside their office at 210 E. Aztec Ave., and she completed the project on Feb. 23. Community Outreach and Patient Empowerment, is a nonprofit organization which focuses on increasing health across Navajo Nation through clinical and preventative care. The mural is an illustration of their logo, featuring a hogan, birds, mountains, and corn. “I worked with COPE on coming up with the design. It’s a reflection of what they do,” Chacon said.
