Lone robber brandished a pistol; undisclosed amount of cash stolen

The lone robber of a west side hotel remains on the lam following a June 21 robbery of the Knights Inn & Suites at 3208 W. Historic Hwy 66.

Gallup Police Officer Charles Steele recorded in a report that at about 12:51 am, a male, possibly Native American and wearing a zip-up black hoodie, black sunglasses, and a red bandana, told a desk clerk at the hotel to “give me the money.”

Steele noted that the clerk on duty stated that the robber entered through a west-side door of the two-story building. The robber got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Auditor to hold meetings to discuss sexual assault kits backlog; In Gallup tonight

SANTA FE– New Mexico State Auditor Tim Keller announced meetings around the state with community members and advocates on sexual assault evidence kits, commonly referred to as “rape kits.” The meetings will take place in the areas that have been selected for the Office of the State Auditor’s audit that aims to identify the causes of the statewide rape kit backlog.

Keller will be in Gallup Thursday evening to help shed light on the backlog.

FBI offers reward in hit-and-run near Shiprock

The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman on the Navajo Nation on or about April 4.

The Native American woman’s body was found along the south shoulder of the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 64, near mile marker 29-1/2, approximately seven miles east of Shiprock.

Evidence at the site indicates the vehicle may have been a 1999-2003 Dodge Ram truck.

The victim’s body was believed to have been at the scene for several hours before being discovered by a school bus driver early on the morning of April 4.

Gallup Council approves $470K Allison bridge construction contract

The Gallup City Council unanimously approved a construction management agreement on June 14 that moves the bigger Allison Corridor Project closer to reality. The vote took place at the regular city meeting and none of the council members rejected the replacement initiative.

The vote calls for Bohannan Huston, Inc. — an Albuquerque-based engineering firm — to provide daily oversight services for the building of a new bridge to replace one that was originally built in 1940.
