WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Steven Begay of Naschitti Chapter was elected June 28 to fill the remaining one-and-half-year term of the Navajo Nation Council Delegate District 14 seat vacated by Mel Begay. Steven Begay, an administrator at Gallup Indian Medical Center, won the race with 731 votes.

There were 2,534 total ballots tallied from Coyote Canyon, Naschitti, Mexican Springs, Tohatchi, and Bread Springs chapters. Council delegates earn $25,000 annually and serve four-year terms. They are not limited in terms of how long they can serve, meaning they can serve as many terms as they win.

Apache County District II, Navajo Nation Zoo partner to fix road

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Thousands of school children who visit the Navajo Nation Zoo annually will finally have a much smoother ride to the zoo, thanks to a partnership between Apache County District II and The Navajo Nation Zoo to improve its road.

Visitation to the zoo is increasing each year, and zoo officials have calculated more than 42,000 visitors annually. Of those numbers, 4,000 local Navajo school children visit annually. The zoo has been gaining more interest from national and international travelers.

Man wearing fishing hat robs Albuquerque bank

ALBUQUERQUE — The FBI and Albuquerque Police Department are looking for a man with a fishing hat who robbed BBVA Compass Bank at 6001 Academy Road NE in Albuquerque on June 29.

The suspect is described as a tall black male with a slender build in his late 20s to early 30s. He wore glasses, a dark buttoned-up, long-sleeved shirt, khaki pants, and a light-colored fishing hat with a black band.

Witnesses said the suspect entered the bank at approximately 5 pm and handed a teller a note that demanded money. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of money to the suspect, who left the bank.
