A poll for KOB-TV by SurveyUSA shows a double-digit lead for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in New Mexico.

The poll also showed a new low for Gov. Susana Martinez when it comes to approval ratings and a wide lead by the Democratic candidate for Secretary of State.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On Oct. 3, Navajo Nation Speaker LoRenzo Bates informed President Russell Begaye that the resolution passed by the Navajo Nation Council approving the fiscal year 2017 budget for the Nation would be in place, despite Begaye’s overreaching of the line-item authority.

Begaye denied funding for Navajo elders, the Nation’s 110 chapters, grazing officials, and many other employees and programs for the Navajo Nation.

Udall, Heinrich announce $344,325 to UNM to support Native American educators

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Oct. 5, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced that the University of New Mexico will receive a $344,325 grant to provide training, licensing and induction services to Native Americans interested in pursuing a career in education.

The purpose of the grant is to train more highly qualified Native American teachers and administrators to serve Indian student populations throughout New Mexico. The grant was awarded through the Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education under the Indian Education Discretionary Grants Program.

Martinez to call to bring back death penalty in special session

The death penalty debate will be coming to the Legislature sooner than many expected.

Susana Martinez announced Sept. 20 that she will add the death penalty to the call for the upcoming special session, adding a contentious piece of debate to a special session that already promised to hold heated debates over fixing the state’s massive budget deficit.

Martinez still has not set a date for the special session.

“I will ask the legislature to reinstate the death penalty as an option for those who murder children and police officers, as well as correctional officers,” Martinez wrote in a statement on Facebook. “Those horrific crimes deserve the ultimate punishment.”

Attorney General Hector Balderas announced Sept. 21 that his office sent an investigatory letter to the makers of EpiPens.

The devices, which inject synthetic adrenaline through the brand-name injector to those suffering severe allergic reactions, have been in the news recently after public outcry about a massive increase in costs in recent years. The prices for the devices increased 550 percent in just under a decade.
