Zuni man sentenced to prison for manslaughter conviction

ALBUQUERQUE – Darold Ray ZunieFeathers, 21, a member and resident of Zuni Pueblo, N.M., was sentenced Aug. 29 in federal court in Santa Fe, to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

ALBUQUERQUE – Thomas J. Yazzie, Jr., 52, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation from Bloomfield, N.M., was sentenced Aug. 29, in federal court in Albuquerque, to 30 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release for his conviction on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Yazzie was arrested on Feb. 7, on an indictment charging him with involuntary manslaughter.  According to the indictment, Yazzie killed a man while driving under the influence of alcohol on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County, N.M., on May 10, 2016.

Gallup Police Officer John Gonzales was dispatched to Third Street and Maloney in reference to a request for law enforcement assistance from Gallup MedStar employees Christian Sarracino and Brian Kohner. Both had witnessed a car turn North onto Third Street, hitting the curb and then going onto the sidewalk, narrowly missing a pedestrian.

They stopped the driver from walking away from the accident and did a welfare check while Officer Gonzales was en route. The subject first identified himself as Patrick Deschine but eventually changed it to James Deschine. He did not have identification on his person.

Scores more fall one, two grades

School grades released by New Mexico Public Education Department Aug. 22, revealed that many of Gallup McKinley County Schools need improvements made – but the overall picture for the district looks rosy.

A handful of schools shined by jumping up a grade or two, while others fell one to two grades.

City Council approves grant match, street closure

The Gallup City Council Aug. 22 meeting full agenda included a request to close Coal Avenue for two days during next month’s Gallup Film Festival; a request for approval of matching funds for the “Our Town”grant; and the acceptance of a public recreation easement from Gallup Land Partners.

The Gallup Film Festival was again front and center during the City Council meeting, taking up more time than any other matter on the 13-item agenda.
