Glenn Ratmeyer named commended student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program

Chris VanSlooten, principal of Rehoboth Christian High School, announced today that Glenn Ratmeyer has been named a Commended Student by the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although Glenn will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Awards, Commended Students are placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

R.I.P. City Councilor Cecil E. Garcia

Cecil Garcia, the former Gallup City Councilor for District 4, passed away Oct. 19 in Phoenix due to a blood disorder. He was 65.

Garcia was born in Grants, NM on Feb. 6, 1950. His family moved to Gallup when he was a child.

A graduate of Gallup High School, Garcia has worked in the mines and was also employed as a Teamster truck driver.

As of recent, he was self-employed as the owner/operator of Garcia’s Landscaping.

In his spare time he enjoyed weightlifting, biking, sports, and the arts. Cecil leaves behind his wife Debbie, his three daughters who live in the Phoenix area, and grandchildren.

Traveling the road from what may be an exposure death caused by an overuse of alcohol to the NCI-run Detox and Treatment Center stirs up a lot of memories from 60 years in Gallup.

Once the journey is complete, however, it is uplifting to realize the gains that have been made in my adopted city and area, especially in the work, knowledge, compassion, and continuing efforts of a small group of people handling a very bad situation on a daily basis.
