WINDOW ROCK, Ariz.—Members of the Naabik’iyátí’ Committee last Thursday, unanimously approved three separate legislations supporting grant applications submitted to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that would fund methamphetamine, suicide, and domestic violence prevention initiatives on the Navajo Nation for a five-year cycle.

Council Delegate Walter Phelps (Cameron, Coalmine Canyon, Leupp, Tolani Lake, Tsidi To ii) sponsored Legislation No. 0312-15, supporting the Winslow Indian Health Care Center’s grant application through Indian Health Services for approximately $175,000.

While America took a day off to celebrate the so-called founding day of Christopher Columbus, Mervyn Tilden, an local activist, took part in coordinating the “Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2015” event held at the Gallup’s Cultural Center on Oct.12.

Former bail bondsman busted for trafficking

A five month long, joint investigation between McKinley County Sheriff's Office and the F.B.I. resulted in the arrest of former bail bondsman Billie Cotton. MCSO lead narcotics investigator Pat Salazar said the the arrest and search warrants were served at Cotton's home on 404 Zane St. 6:45 am Monday morning.

"We found six stolen firearms and three altered firearms," he said.

Salazar said the altered firearms were immediately taken into evidence, but adding a silencer or altering a gun to make it to fire faster are common modifications.

BREAKING NEWS: Woman's body found in field

Gallup Police Department responded to a call about a woman found unconscious in a field, north of Magic Car Wash on West Jefferson Avenue Wednesday morning. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An official from the Office of the Medical Investigator arrived on scene to investigate the death. GPD Capt. and spokesman Rick White said based on the preliminary investigation, it appears that that no foul play was involved and she died sometime during that night.

The Native American woman was sleeping on a tarp and was covered with a blanket when a woman from a nearby homeless encampment discovered her body. Police arrived on the scene, shortly before 7:30 am.
