Gallup Police are looking for a man named Skyler Jonathan Gishie, who is believed to have been involved in a recent shooting that left one person dead. He has an active warrant out for his arrest.

On Nov. 16, around 2:15 am, Gallup Police Officer Elijah Bowman was dispatched to 233 W. Coal Ave., where he found a man who was shot in the head. The victim was eventually identified as Derrick Orosco, 33.

Officer Anthony Morales tried to save the victim’s life by starting chest compressions and calling for emergency medical personnel. Orosco was transported to a local hospital, where he eventually passed away due to his injuries.

Det. Tasheena Wilson took on the case to identify the suspect who shot Orosco. She got in contact with the business owner of Weaving in Beauty, which is located at 213 W. Coal Ave. The business owner said she had footage of the shooting.

According to the affidavit, around 10:15 pm on Nov. 15 three people can be seen in the video, along with a white Nissan. Gishie, 23, was later identified as one of these individuals.

Gishie and the man and woman who were with him approached the vehicle, and Gishie allegedly pulled a handgun from his jacket pocket as he approached the car’s driver side. Gishie reportedly racked the handgun, putting a live round into the chamber of the weapon.

The two men reportedly gather around the car, appearing to have a conversation. As this goes on, Orosco appears in the video, running into frame from the eastside sidewalk.

A confrontation reportedly broke out, with Orosco allegedly pushing the man who was with Gishie with his shoulder. Once Orosco pushed his acquaintance, Gishie reportedly reached for the gun in his pocket and pointed it at Orosco.

The other man allegedly tried to hit Orosco but missed.

According to the affidavit, Gishie fired the gun multiple times during the fight. Eventually, Gishie and his two accomplices got into the white Nissan and fled the scene, leaving Orosco crumpled on the ground.

On Nov. 17 around 1 am, New Mexico State Police and the Crownpoint District of the Navajo Nation Police Department pulled over a white Nissan car on Cousins Road in Vanderwagen.

According to the affidavit, the two individuals in the car were the same people who were with Gishie during the Nov. 16 shooting. The vehicle was registered to the woman who was involved in the shooting. The woman was arrested by NNPD for a DWI and the other man was taken into custody for public intoxication.

The next day a detective interviewed the woman. She explained that she and her boyfriend were driving around Gallup on Nov. 16 when they saw their friend Gishie walking along Highway 66.

The three of them went to the American Bar located at 221 W. Coal Ave. to play pool. The woman said they noticed a white Nissan following them. She said the occupants of the car were “throwing gang signs” at them and then they drove off.

The woman said her group was at the bar for about two hours before they walked back to her vehicle. Suddenly, an unknown man came up and punched the woman’s boyfriend. This man was later identified as Orosco. The woman said the man never said anything to her group.

The men allegedly got into a fight, and the woman reportedly heard four gunshots.

After the shooting the group drove to the east side of Gallup and Gishie allegedly began acting nervous. He asked to be dropped off and jumped out of the car. After Gishie got out of the car the woman switched seats with her boyfriend and began driving.

A judge signed a warrant for Gishie’s arrest on Nov. 21. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, negligent use of a deadly weapon, unlawful carrying of a firearm in a licensed liquor establishment, tampering with evidence, and public affray. The Gallup Police Department is asking the public to immediately notify them if they see Gishie, as he is considered armed and dangerous.
