Students take part in Earth Day WORK EVENT

Roaming neighborhoods in squads to pick up trash, hundreds of students braved the wind April 21-22 to take part in Keep Gallup Clean and Beautiful’s Earth Day Clean-up.

The event began with a challenge within Gallup-McKinley County Schools to see which team could pick up the most trash.

All students at Catherine A. Miller, Lincoln, David Skeet and Turpen elementary schools, plus 100 from Thoreau and 175 from Stagecoach Elementary got into the act. Among middle schools, Crownpoint (199), Kennedy (600+), Tohatchi (100) and Thoreau joined in. Miyamura High School had 83 participants, including 15 teachers and assistants, eight Student Council members, plus members of the Key Club, MESA Club, Helpers Club and Ms. Strehl’s class. Another 250 students at Crownpoint High School, and club members from Gallup High School also helped out, as well as youngsters from McKinley Academy and special needs students from the district’s LIDS program.

In addition to the student teams, six members and friends of the McKinley Citizens’ Recycling Council answered the call, picking up “one huge bag of litter” from around the Larry Brian Mitchell Recreation Center.

In the end, the 242 students from Red Rock Elementary School won, picking up a respectable 51 bags of trash from around the campus. They’ll get their reward May 16 when the district’s food service program, SFE, will set up a fresh fruit stand for all helpers in honor of their work.
