Gallup takes third place in annual City of Champions tournament

ARTESIA, N.M. — Junior forward Ashley Antone scored 18 points and fellow junior forward Amanda Mitchel hit 12 in a 69-52 win over Artesia Dec. 9 in the annual City of Champions tournament. The Lady Bengals’ win was good enough for third place in the tournament.

Gallup (6-2, 0-0) led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter of play. Gallup outscored the Lady Bulldogs in the second half and pulled away for the win. The loss was the second consecutive for Artesia High (2-2, 0-0), which dropped a 50-43 decision to Silver on Dec. 8 and in the same tournament.

Antone, Gallup’s leading scorer over the 2017 girls basketball season, was named to the all-tournament team, as was Mitchel. Junior guard Kamryn Yazzie scored 11 points for Gallup and senior guard Lanae Notah pit up 10 for the Lady Bengals.

In previous games at the City of Champions Tournament, the Lady Bengals beat Goddard 52-45 in a first round game and lost to Carlsbad 63-33 in a semi-final game. The Lady Bengals take on Capital (6-4, 0-0) of Santa Fe on Dec. 15.

San Carlos 49 Chinle 46

CHINLE, Ariz. — Senior guard Elijah James scored 8 points, but senior shooting guard Christian Noise of San Carlos scored a game high 20 points for the Braves in a 49-46 win at the Chinle Wildcat Den. The game was part of the annual Choice Wireless Invitational Tournament.

San Carlos led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter. Noise was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Chinle (3-2, 0-1) plays away games this week against Holbrook (4-2, 0-0), Tuba City (2-1, 0-0) and Window Rock (2-2, 0-0).
