The McKinley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a set of bones that were found Sept. 26 on the Mendoza road by an archaeologist.

The remains were found at about the three-mile marker and early indications show that they’re not recent.

According to the sheriff’s report, Jeremy Loven said archaeologists were doing some excavation work in the area when they came across human remains. He said they had found part of a human arm and some other human parts when they were digging through the dirt.

The local Office of the Medical Investigator was called  to examine the bones. After the examination, the bones were turned back to the archaeologists to be logged.
