Horses on a premises in Grant County are under quarantine following private practitioner notification to Animal Health Officials of the finding of one horse with lesions compatible with Vesicular Stomatitis.

The “suspect’ horse and one other equine on the premises are under quarantine. Appropriate bio-security measures are in place at this time.  There is a history of recent travel and commingling of the “suspect” horse with other horses on a trail multi-day ride; notification of the “suspect” horse is being given to other trail ride participants.

Producer and private practitioner vigilance for evidence of vesicular lesions in livestock and immediate reporting of such findings to state and/or federal animal health officials is essential for prompt diagnosis and control of disease spread and initiation of bio-security measures to protect other livestock.

A June 8 New Mexico Livestock Board update, states there are three  horses suspected to have the virus. One each in Eddy, Dona Ana and Grant counties.
