GRANTS — A Grants High School student-athlete played a crucial role in helping his team win a national football game in Florida earlier this month.

Bryan Hernandez, a senior at Grants High School, helped his team, dubbed the White Team in the All-America Classic, secure a 24-13 victory in Orlando Jan. 2 by catching a late 4th quarter touchdown.

“It was awesome getting to play football again,” Hernandez told the Gallup Sun. “It felt like I had a lot on the line, but I feel like it made me work harder.”

As a slot receiver, Hernadez’s stats for the game included two passes for 24 yards and one touchdown.

Grants athlete selected to play in national football game

High school football standout to play in All-America Classic

GRANTS — A Grants high school football player will have the opportunity to showcase his talents in a  game exclusive to high school seniors.

Student-athlete Bryan Hernandez, a senior at Grants High School, has been invited to play in the Spiral All-America Classic Bowl game in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 4.

The game, now in its third year, will have scouts from Division I football programs on-hand to see the talent from the student-athletes.

Overall, 110 players are invited to take part in the game.

Numerous sports seasons were upended during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Professional Bull Riding managed to see its season through, capping off with the PBR World Finals in Arlington, Tex. from Nov. 12-15.

One of those finalists hails from the Navajo Nation: Keyshawn Whitehorse. Growing up in southern Utah, Whitehorse and his cousins would run around the land from dawn to dusk, and he began bucking calves by the time he was eight.

Whitehorse and his father learned about bull riding together by watching PBR events on TV and later practicing on a makeshift barrel behind their home.

A Gallup boxer won the first Golden Gloves State Championship in the Middleweight Division the first weekend in March at the Raymond G. Sanchez Comnmunity Center in Albuquerque.

Brandon Garcia’s USA boxing coach, Jesus Chamberlain, called it a technical fight in which Garcia delivered a concrete straight left in the third round on March 7, resulting in a Technical Knockout.

The next day, Garcia delivered an upper-cut and hook, knocking his opposition into the ropes, and causing the referee to stop the fight in the first minute of the second round, when Garcia was awarded the Technical Knockout victory.
