REHOBOTH, N.M. – Navajo Nation Vice President Myron Lizer was invited to Nikki VanSlooten’s sixth-grade class lecture to discuss the importance of tribal sovereignty, growth, and development at Rehoboth Christian School, located east of Gallup, N.M Jan. 30.

Lizer discussed the significance of the “Long Walk” and the Navajo Treaty of 1868. In 1864, the Navajo people were forcefully removed from their homelands and forced to walk 300 miles to Bosque Redondo, N.M. The signing of the Treaty of 1868 allowed the Navajo people to return to their homelands and establish a government-to-government relationship with the U.S. government.

Shawna Yellowhair, a sophomore at The University of New Mexico Gallup Campus, was recently named as a semi-finalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s prestigiousCooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.  The competitive scholarship program supports highly accomplished community college students as they transfer to four-year institutions to complete bachelor’s degrees.

Yellowhair was selected as a semi-finalist from nearly 1,500 students representing 369 two-year colleges in 45 states.

Shawna Yellowhair, a sophomore at The University of New Mexico-Gallup Campus, was recently named as a semi-finalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s prestigious Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.


The competitive scholarship program supports highly accomplished community college students as they transfer to four-year institutions to complete bachelor’s degrees.

Kenneth Becenti, 84, of Standing Rock, N.M. died January 18, 2019.

He was preceded in death by Willie Becenti-Father, Nellie Becenti-Mother, Cecilia Becenti-Sister, Dan Becenti-Brother, Sam Becenti.

He is survived by Vicky Becenti, Vonnie Luxon, Vangie Becenti. Brothers: Jay Becenti, Eugene Becenti, Bennie Becenti; and Sisters: Annie B. Alfred, Ada Yellowhair, Faye Becenti, Rose Becenti.

The family will receive friends at Standing Rock Chapter.

Funeral Services were held January 24, 2019 at 10 am.

Internment at Gallup City Cemetery.
