101 years old and going strong
Editor,This is a belated report about my favorite and beloved maternal aunt, Josephine Maire Slinky, who celebrated her 101-year-old birthday party at St. Michaels Mission Hall in St. Michaels, Ariz., July 10 from 2-6 pm.
By her Navajo clanship, she is Riverside and Water Streams Coming Together.
Early in her life, she was uprooted from Chinle Valley Community due to attending Albuquerque Indian School in Albuquerque, N.M. and then moved to Morenci, Ariz., where her husband worked for Morenci Copper Mine until it closed down, and then her final move was to Ft. Defiance, Ariz., where she worked for the Ft. Defiance Indian Hospital until she retired.

Report shows needs and barriers facing state’s young parents
ALBUQUERQUE — With limited access to opportunities to advance their education and find family sustaining jobs, New Mexico’s 33,000 young adult parents face hurdles to support their children and fulfill their own potential, according to Opening Doors for Young Parents, the latest KIDS COUNT policy report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
The Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT grantee in New Mexico, New Mexico Voices for Children, joined the call for action so these young parents can contribute to the state’s communities and economy.

On Sept. 25, the Gallup City Council passed a Resolution No. 2018-27 — “A RESOLUTION OPPOSING TRANSPORTATION OF HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE VIA RAILWAY THROUGH THE CITY OF GALLUP FOR THE PURPOSE OF TEMPORARY CONSOLIDATED STORAGE OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE IN NEW MEXICO.”
Five other cities in New Mexico (Albuquerque, Bernalillo, Las Cruces, Jal and Lake Arthur) have passed resolutions in opposition to this transportation on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and Interstate 40 which will pass through McKinley County and the City of Gallup.
There are at least 14 Navajo communities along the proposed transport corridor and numerous Navajo homes as well from the Eastern...

Take Heart
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV)These are the last words of instruction Jesus gives His disciples before the crucifixion. “…take heart…” could also be translated “Be courageous.”
Jesus is calling for His disciples to go beyond their own comfort, to do that which they might not otherwise, on behalf of Jesus. Yet Jesus goes beyond a call to “Be Courageous,” he tells them why they can be courageous: He has “overcome the world.”
All the pain of suffering of sin and death… He has overcome.
He has proven victorious over the worst...
