After being announced as the choice for Gallup’s new police chief, Franklin Boyd was sworn in at a ceremony at the El Morro Theatre April 19.

The ceremony featured members of the Gallup City Council, as well as community leaders, highlighting Boyd’s achievements.

“This is a great day for Gallup,” Mayor Jackie McKinney said. “[We are acknowledging] someone who has dedicated a lot of time to this city and cares very much about safety in our community.”

McKinney said that Boyd is soft-spoken, good-hearted, and humble, but he is able to speak up assertively for the police department.

IDENTITY THEFT

Mentmore, April 14

The McKinley County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of a Mentmore man who said he is the victim of identity theft.

Matthew John told deputies that he had received statements from two loan companies that he has been approved for loans of $5,000 and $4,000. He said he also had received approval from a mail order company.

When asked how someone could have gotten his personal information, he said he lost his wallet containing his social security card in the mall four years ago. He said he also does personal business using his WIFI account.

NPD is seeking the public's assistance in locating Bessie Garcia, a Native American female, 76-years-old, 5'5" tall, weighing 160 pounds, with white hair and brown eyes.

She has a tattoo on her left hand of “Bessie”, a scar on her left eye brow and her right hand is bandaged from a surgical procedure. Bessie was last seen on April 29, at Residential RA 4 off County Road 7780 in Nageezi, N.M.  It is unknown on what type of clothing she was last...

Trudy Martinez, 28, of Twin Lakes, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation, is wanted by the FBI on a federal criminal complaint charging her with murder. 

Martinez is accused of fatally shooting another adult in Twin Lakes on Friday night.

She fled the scene with her own children, 10- and 9-year-old girls and a 5-year-old boy.

Martinez is also charged with use of a firearm in a crime of violence and crimes occurring in Indian County. 

Martinez is 5'3" tall and weighs about 150 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. 

She should be considered armed and dangerous.
