Water points established during Gallup closure

Two water points to the east and west of Gallup have been created to provide access to the Navajo Nation during the lock down of the city.

A 1,200 gallon tanker with potable water will be located at both the Gallup Port of Entry and Red Rock State Park.

At the Gallup Port of Entry, The National Guard has set up a 1,200-gallon tanker with potable water and an additional 6,500-gallon tanker will arrive there from the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority. The site will operate from 8 am - 7 pm until noon May 7.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham responded quickly to Gallup Mayor Louis Bonaguidi’s request May 3 to extend the lock down for an additional three days.

The emergency order that began May 1 at noon, will continue through noon, May 7 as part of the aggressive effort to slow the community spread of COVID-19 in Gallup.

The governor intends to formalize the extension of her emergency declaration on May 4.  She also plans to amend the hours of business closures. Business curfew hours will mirror the curfew hours on the nearby Navajo Nation, from 8 pm to 5 am.

Gallup Mayor Louis Bonaguidi has written a second letter to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, hoping for an extension of the lock down, and a change in the curfew. The original lock down ordered by the governor is set to expire at noon May 4. Should it be approved, another three-day lock down would extend to noon May 7.

Bonaguidi told the Gallup Sun May 3 that health professionals he’s been talking to said if the COVID-19 numbers don’t break in the next two to three weeks, the virus is going to continue ravaging the area all summer long.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham invoked the New Mexico Riot Control Act, which authorized her to enact temporary restrictions to mitigate the uninhibited spread of COVID-19 in the City of Gallup.

The Riot Control Act authorizes the governor to, for the temporary existence of a state of emergency, prohibit persons being on public streets and the use of certain streets and highways, among other broad emergency restrictions.
