Apache County District II, Navajo Nation Zoo partner to fix road

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Thousands of school children who visit the Navajo Nation Zoo annually will finally have a much smoother ride to the zoo, thanks to a partnership between Apache County District II and The Navajo Nation Zoo to improve its road.

Visitation to the zoo is increasing each year, and zoo officials have calculated more than 42,000 visitors annually. Of those numbers, 4,000 local Navajo school children visit annually. The zoo has been gaining more interest from national and international travelers.

Man wearing fishing hat robs Albuquerque bank

ALBUQUERQUE — The FBI and Albuquerque Police Department are looking for a man with a fishing hat who robbed BBVA Compass Bank at 6001 Academy Road NE in Albuquerque on June 29.

The suspect is described as a tall black male with a slender build in his late 20s to early 30s. He wore glasses, a dark buttoned-up, long-sleeved shirt, khaki pants, and a light-colored fishing hat with a black band.

Witnesses said the suspect entered the bank at approximately 5 pm and handed a teller a note that demanded money. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of money to the suspect, who left the bank.

Navajo Nation opposes liquor license transfer; Decision to go before county commissioners

During a public hearing on Jun. 27 regarding the transfer of ownership of a liquor license currently held by Tomahawk Inc., in Prewitt, Navajo Nation Vice President Jonathan Nez said the Nation does not support the transfer of Ownership to Reds Mart, LLC.

“We officially oppose this transfer,” Vice President Nez said. “It only changes the location but it does not affect the negative impact a liquor establishment has on our people. Beyond that, the liquor license will stay in close proximity to the Baca Dlo’Ayashi Community School.”

Navajo Man from Sheep Springs sentenced to prison for federal voluntary manslaughter

ALBUQUERQUE – , 53, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation who resides in Sheep Springs, N.M., was sentenced this morning in federal court in Santa Fe, N.M., to 100 months in prison for his voluntary manslaughter conviction.  Denetclaw will be on supervised release for three years following his prison sentence.

Denetclaw was arrested on June 23, 2014, on a criminal complaint charging him with killing a Navajo man on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County, N.M., on June 21, 2014.  The crime occurred during an alcohol-infused argument between Denetclaw and the victim.  Denetclaw was subsequently indicted on June 24, 2015.

On Jan. 28, Denetclaw pled guilty to a felony...
