Pats draw Deming in first-round state playoffs

The Miyamura Patriots gave up 34 first half points and went on to lose to 5A foe Aztec High 64-56 in an offensively-charged football game played Nov. 3 at Angelo DiPaolo Memorial Stadium. The game was the last of the season for both teams. The Patriots lost a week earlier to another San Juan County 5A team (Farmington), 54-40.

Miyamura now plays Deming (6-4, 3-0) Nov. 10 at home and in a first-round state playoff game. The Wildcats are coming off a 42-14 thrashing last week of Alamogordo.

Gallup Cross Country ran at Lions Wilderness Park in Farmington for the District 1-AAAAA Championship on Oct. 27. The boys’ team finished 4th of six teams with 93 points and the girls’ team was 3rd of the same six schools with 73 points. Individual places and times below:

Pats going for second unbeaten season

This could be the second unbeaten regular season under the tutelage of head football coach Wes Shank at Miyamura High School. That is quite an accomplishment for a town like Gallup, even though they are not consecutive seasons, not known for its prowess on the gridiron.

The difference is the head coach, not the players although the Patriots have many good ones in uniform. A quick look at the statistics on maxpreps.com assures the local naysayers and probably puts a little fear in the hearts of the opposition. Both are good things.
