Lobos fans, students, youths, staff and City of Gallup officials filled Sammy C’s Rock N’ Sports Pub & Grille as both the University of New Mexico’s athletic director and the head coach for the men’s soccer team presented themselves March 21.

Sammy Chioda, owner of Sammy C’s, welcomed and introduced the sports leaders. Chioda and city officials have worked together in the past to invite UNM athletic coaches to visit Gallup.

This year, Chioda was pleased to introduce UNM’s new athletic director, Eddie Nuñez, and UNM’s head coach for the men’s soccer team, Jeremy Fishbein.

CHINLE, Ariz. — Tim Süe Süe Liufau is filled with optimism for the future, because of the successes of his past. The next stop in terms of coaching varsity high school football could be a telephone call away.

That’s the mindset of Süe Süe Liufau months after resigning as the head varsity football coach at Chinle High School. The popular Süe Süe Liufau coached the football team at Chinle for eight years, before moving on to Millennium High School in Goodyear, Ariz.

WINGATE, N.M. — Chinle (5-5, 2-0) beat Page 8-2, 6-5 in a double-header baseball game played at Page High School. The Wildcats scored a slew of runs in the latter innings to get the lead and keep the lead. Starting pitcher Troy Yazzie recorded two RBIs and stole base three times.

SANTA ANA PUEBLO — Tohatchi senior guard Brianna Denetso nailed a 3-pointer with just seconds left in the game but the Lady Cougars couldn’t connect on a subsequent shot and fell to Texico 48-47 in the state 3A girls basketball championship March 9 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

Tohatchi’s 47-46 lead with 13 seconds left in regulation came as a result of a long jumper by Denetso. It was players like Denetso that stepped up to aid the Lady Cougars in getting through the 3A tournament the past several years. Tohatchi won the 3A state championship last year after beating Eunice.
