Sporting clays game hits Gallup

They call it “golf with a shotgun,” and it is this comparative name that has thrust the target game of sporting clays to the forefront of outdoor recreation in the Indian Capital.

Sporting clay is a target game played with a shotgun and “birdshot” ammunition. The clays are launched by a machine called a “trap.” In virtually every situation, automatic traps are used at stations (holes in golf), and the presentations of these targets in flight to a shooter replicates game bird-shooting.

In some game scenarios, there are rabbit targets that run on the ground like jackrabbits. Just like no two golf courses are the same, no two sporting clay...

Lady Patriots record 11 straight hits in third, fourth innings

The Miyamura Lady Patriots used strong performances in the third and fourth innings to put away the St. Michaels Lady Cardinals 17-7 March 31 in a varsity softball game at Ford Canyon park.

The game was part of the Wingate Tournament. There were six teams that played in the tournament.

The score of the game was 3-2 in the top of the third with St. Michaels leading. Then the Lady Patriots got hot at the bat and recorded eleven straight hits off of relief pitcher Amaya Joe.

Gallup Soccer League looks to make improvements

After a recent visit from the head coach of the University of New Mexico’s men’s soccer team, the Gallup Soccer League is eager to get its own ball rolling.

Coach Jeremy Fishbein and UNM Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez both spoke to a crowd of fans at Sammy C’s March 21 during a Lobo Meet & Greet event. In attendance were Alejandro Murillo and Delfino Sanchez: the head coach of the U8 GSL team and the league’s vice president, respectively.

The two said they felt honored to be present in a meeting with the university’s head coach and athletic director, as it was a great way for them to get things started for this year’s league.

MHS takes second game, 5-2

The Miyamura Patriots mercy-ruled the Del Norte Knights 10-0 March 24 in the first game of a varsity baseball double-header and went on to beat the Knights 5-2 in the second game of the series.

The Knights (2-9) fell victim to a no-hitter by Brandon Vidal of the Patriots in the first game of the double-header. Del Norte actually didn’t get a hit in the series until about the third inning of the second game.
