Bengals lose to the Broncos

The Gallup Bengals lost their first game of the season on March 8. The team lost to the Kirtland Central Broncos 42-0.

Tohatchi Cougars win their first game of the season

The Tohatchi Cougars were finally able to play their first football game of the school year on Saturday. The team won 48-8 against the Thoreau Hawks at the Thoreau High School football field.

 

The Cougars were up by 14 points after the first quarter because of a touchdown and an interception return, which led to another touchdown. They led 26-0 at halftime. In the third quarter two more touchdowns got the team to 42-0.

 

Tohatchi (1-0) will play Shiprock at home on March 13.

Coach says new field will feel like a pillow top

A new football field for Crownpoint High School will cost almost twice as much as originally anticipated due to a “hidden condition” school district maintenance personnel came upon when they started the project.

Roxy Flanders, director of construction and maintenance for the Gallup-McKinley County School District, said the Crownpoint Eagles’ field will cost approximately $800,000 — some $350,000 more than was budgeted — because the subgrade was in poor condition. District officials thought they would just be replacing the field’s turf, with a price tag of $400,000.

N.M. student-athlete secures victory in national high school football game

GRANTS — A Grants High School student-athlete played a crucial role in helping his team win a national football game in Florida earlier this month.

Bryan Hernandez, a senior at Grants High School, helped his team, dubbed the White Team in the All-America Classic, secure a 24-13 victory in Orlando Jan. 2 by catching a late 4th quarter touchdown.

“It was awesome getting to play football again,” Hernandez told the Gallup Sun. “It felt like I had a lot on the line, but I feel like it made me work harder.”

As a slot receiver, Hernadez’s stats for the game included two passes for 24 yards and one touchdown.

Grants athlete selected to play in national football game

High school football standout to play in All-America Classic

GRANTS — A Grants high school football player will have the opportunity to showcase his talents in a  game exclusive to high school seniors.

Student-athlete Bryan Hernandez, a senior at Grants High School, has been invited to play in the Spiral All-America Classic Bowl game in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 4.

The game, now in its third year, will have scouts from Division I football programs on-hand to see the talent from the student-athletes.

Overall, 110 players are invited to take part in the game.
