A Gallup boxer won the first Golden Gloves State Championship in the Middleweight Division the first weekend in March at the Raymond G. Sanchez Comnmunity Center in Albuquerque.

Brandon Garcia’s USA boxing coach, Jesus Chamberlain, called it a technical fight in which Garcia delivered a concrete straight left in the third round on March 7, resulting in a Technical Knockout.

The next day, Garcia delivered an upper-cut and hook, knocking his opposition into the ropes, and causing the referee to stop the fight in the first minute of the second round, when Garcia was awarded the Technical Knockout victory.

NMAA basketball championships continue

Games without fans

With the guidance from its political leaders and health and education agencies, the New Mexico Activities Association will continue to play its basketball championships.

The players just won’t have fans in the stands.

According to a NMAA release sent out March 12, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the Departments of Health and Education recommended that only team members, officials and essential facility and tournament workers be allowed at both Dreamstyle Arena and the Santa Ana Star Center.

Even members of the media will not be allowed entrance to either facility.
