Big Brothers Big Sisters launches contest for mentors

Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region is seeking mentors and is looking to reward one of them with a roundtrip ticket on a major airline. It's part of the organization's 60 Bigs in 60 Days recruitment campaign.

Managing Regional Director Sarah Piano said in her media announcement that this is part of a recruitment campaign designed to sign up mentors before July 31. She added that mentoring relationships are important to youngsters who have been socially isolated by the pandemic over the past year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Mountain Region has 175 children waiting to be paired with a volunteer mentor, referred to as a "Big," to help them achieve their full potential.

Student art showcase beginning in May

Beginning in May, student learning through the arts will be showcased on a rolling basis at EXPO New Mexico, the fairgrounds for the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque. Educators are invited to upload images of their students’ art during the last two weeks of each month beginning April 13-30.

Beginning in May, selected student artwork from counties across the state will appear on the large digital display boards at EXPO New Mexico for a designated period of time. In addition, the New Mexico State Fair website will include a section to display still photographs of band, dance, movement, media arts and theater student works.

Meet Colt Balok. Or maybe you already have. Colt Balok, who until the age of seven, was known as Matthew Tyler Crosby, was adopted at the age of two, by a couple who likes animals.  His new dad was a veterinarian. His new mom runs the humane society. The couple had six other children…all with first names that started with a “C.”

 

Since Matthew doesn’t start with a “C,” he felt a little out of place, until, at the age of seven, he chose himself a new first name, one that started with a “C.”  He named himself Colt, because his best friend’s name was Cole. He became Colt Matthew Balok.

Navajo artists, jewelers and sculptors show at 98th Santa Fe Indian Market

SANTA FE,  - The American Indian art and people of the 98th Santa Fe Indian Market have returned to their respective homes.

But for one weekend, from Aug. 16-18, the Santa Fe Plaza was the center of the Native American universe as jewelers, painters, sculptors, photographers, writers, clothing designers, filmmakers and all people in between converged for the Indian Market.

Countless Navajo artists participated in the 2019 Indian Market across various mediums. Some have been attending the event for a decade or more. Others were recently introduced to the Market, but all said they have love for what the annual event has to offer.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The “Buy Authentic Navajo” brand cuts to the heart of Navajo business. Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise has a unique business model that was established by the Advisory Committee of the Navajo Tribal Council.

The Advisory Committee enacted a resolution titled, “Approving the Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise Payroll Deduction Plan for the Navajo Tribal Employees,” by a vote of 7-5 on Nov. 14, 1979.
