Running Time: 143 minutes

Back in the ’90s, a movie featuring a comic villain parodying over-the-top action and spy movies requested, “...sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads.” I’m not entirely sure what this is a sign of, but it appears that some 20 years later, we have come full circle.

The new DC superhero movie Aquaman not only features the above seafaring threat, but also asks us to take it all seriously.

To be fair, the DC filmic universe has had its share of turkeys and this latest adventure is a modest improvement over several other features in the superhero franchise. There are some impressive action scenes as this...

Running Time: 117 minutes

Audiences have certainly gotten a lot of Spider-Man over the past 15 years, including a film franchise, a rebooted franchise and another reconfigured version as part of the Marvel Universe.

Now, Sony brings not one, but numerous incarnations of the superhero into an animated take on the character. Surprisingly, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is better than anticipated, employing unique visuals and plenty of action, while poking fun at tropes associated with the role.

This version follows teenager Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), who lives in a world inhabited by a heroic Spider-Man (Chris Pine). When the lead is also bitten...

‘Green Book’ hits the right notes

Running Time: 130 minutes

It has been more than two decades since filmmaker Peter Farrelly co-wrote and co-directed the hits Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary. In the time since, the quality of work produced has been, well, not quite as stellar.

The past decade alone has seen spotty output from the filmmaker that includes titles like Hall Pass, The Three Stooges, Movie 43 (which I absolutely hated) and Dumb and Dumber To. So when it was announced that his latest feature was generating positive buzz, this reviewer couldn’t help but be suspicious.

Inspired by a true story, Green Book is an early ’60s set drama/comedy that follows...
