Rating: ««« out of ««««

Running Time: 102 minutes

Most late-night shows look like smoothly produced and effortless exercises in entertainment, bringing stand-up and celebrity guests together and speaking about latest projects and topics of the day. Of course, it’s an immense amount of work for the host and even more so for the writers tasked with creating talking points almost nightly for a national market. The new comedy Late Night attempts to shed some light on the process and one woman’s attempt to fulfill her aspirations.

Chemical plant worker Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling) has always dreamed of being a comedy writer and after talking to a company head who also owns a TV...

Running Time: 86 minutes

The Secret Life of Pets proved to be something of a surprise success back in 2016, chronicling the lives of animals and what they get up to when their owners are away. It earned solid reviews from the press and a massive box office haul. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before audiences would be receiving a sequel. The Secret Life of Pets 2 is bright, colorful and will certainly impress children. However, adults will find it nothing more than genial and forgettable. They’ll probably be most pleased by the fact that their kids are sufficiently distracted.

Even if you haven’t seen the original film, there’s nothing...

‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ is overbaked and...well...undercooked

Running Time: 131 minutes

This reviewer is something of a monster movie aficionado who grew up watching old creature features on the television screen before actively seeking them out on various video formats. As a fan, I can come across as somewhat picky about them. The previous giant lizard film from 2015 had its share of issues. However, the movie succeeded in presenting the titular being with a sense of gravitas, displaying it as a truly immense and awe-inspiring force of nature. Godzilla: King of the Monsters does feature an onslaught of monsters fighting across the globe, but doesn’t feel as exciting, impressive, or weighty.

Running Time: 128 minutes

Disney certainly has gone all in with live-action remakes of its animated titles. Just two months ago we got the new Dumbo, and this week Aladdin is the feature being updated. This effort follows the original far more closely, which is both a benefit and a curse. The result is a pretty looking redo with excellent production values and photography on display. Yet its construction does feel a bit overextended, and the results are something of a mixed bag.

Set in the Arabian city of Agrabah, Aladdin (Mena Massoud) is a thief who survives by taking what he can, when he can (although he also seems to enjoy giving his stolen property...
