In particular, the previous installment, which some fans said dispensed with story elements that they held most dear. For this reviewer, the franchise sequels have served as enjoyable if insubstantial popcorn entertainment. The latest chapter is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which attempts to revise some recently added elements, link itself back to the original trilogy, and provide a stirring franchise finale.

Director Clint Eastwood’s output has been a little spotty lately, with recent efforts like The Mule making an unremarkable impression on this reviewer and The 15:17 to Paris ranking as one the weakest films in his entire catalog. The good news is that his latest, Richard Jewell, is a definite improvement over those two pictures, including some excellent performances from the cast. So, it’s unfortunate that with all the good on display here, there are some issues still present, with one aspect of the feature coming across as particularly misguided and malicious.

While a filmmaker’s imagination can spin fantastic, incredible and disturbing tales, you often find that even the most fervent creative mind can’t tell a more horrifying story than those that are ripped directly from the real world and newspaper headlines.
