DRIVER WITH PINK BACKPACK ABANDONS BRONZE CAR

A bronze Hyundai was left near Draco Street in the morning after the driver apparently left the area.

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Davis arrived at the scene and found the vehicle unoccupied. The caller met Davis and told him an unknown male carrying a pink backpack said the transmission went out and left. The caller said the man appeared to have something resembling a gun handle sticking out of his pocket, but the caller could not confirm that it was a firearm.

MCKINLEY COUNTY —Throughout the months of January, February, and March, the McKinley County DWI Task Force, including but not limited to the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, Gallup Police, and New Mexico State Police, will be conducting DWI Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols along with seatbelt enforcement within McKinley County. Law Enforcement will be targeting impaired drivers on roadways and at checkpoints.

The McKinley County Sheriff’s Office is looking for photos of five former sheriffs who have served the county during the years beginning in 1901 until 1930, to include them in a memorial plaque.

The following former sheriffs’ pictures are being sought for the honor.

William A. Smith (1901-1902); (1903-1904)

Tom P. Talle (1911-1912); (1909-1910)

R. L. Roberts   (1913-1914); (1915-1916); (1917-1918); (1929-1930)

J. H. McCamant (1919-1920); (1921-1922)

Lou Meyers  (1923-1924)

HIDING IN A BURNED-OUT BUILDING
Thoreau, Dec. 21

A can of “Smash” costing $3.19 landed a 31-year-old man behind bars.

When a man was spotted taking a can containing an alcoholic beverage from the Speedway store at 92 Hwy. 371 about 10:13 am, the McKinley County Sheriff’s Department got a call. The suspect was wearing a black jacket, beige pants, and blue shoes, and was seen running from the store in a westward direction.

Deputy Paul Davis arrived and was told the suspect was seen running toward Windsong Avenue. He went to a vacant burned down structure on Windsong and found two people.
