Westman transferred to Gallup to face murder charges

On Monday, Ryan Westman came home to Gallup.

Westman  25, had been held in the San Juan County Jail since Jan. 24 on charges stemming from a pursuit after Westman headed north on U.S, Highway 491 from Gamerco to avoid capture by deputies for the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 28, he was transferred to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center to face charges of murder.

Westman, who is also known by the nickname “Bam,” was charged in the Jan. 22 death of 57-year-old Mitchell Chavez who was beaten to death with an ax.

Westman comes back to an area where he has a string of more than a dozen arrests over the last five years for a series of violent crimes. Among them...

DA to fully prosecute Thoreau man for killing pet dog

A Thoreau man is facing felony charges after he reportedly trapped his dog under his trailer and killed him with a crossbow.

George A. Milliken, 34, has been charged with two counts of felony cruelty to animals. Both are fourth degree felonies, punishable by 18 months in jail.

McKinley County Sheriff Deputy J. Todachine Jr. said he was dispatched to the St. Bonaventure Trailer Park on May 15, in connection with a report of a dog being shot with a crossbow.

When he got there, he spoke to Milliken, who said the dog, named Panda, belonged to him. Panda had gotten under the trailer and damaged his heating unit, which he said would cost about $1,000 to repair.

STABBING DEBACLE

5/13, Yahtahey

The McKinley County Sheriff”s Office is looking for a man who stabbed a St. Michaels man in the arm Monday, north of Yah-Ta-Hey. They are also looking for the victim who was discovered to have two bench warrants outstanding from Bernallilo County.

Deputy Garylie James was dispatched to an area about 15 miles north of Gallup on U. S. Highway 491 about 6 pm about a man who had been stabbed. The man, Tony Lilly, 28, told James said he and the man, whose name he said was Ty, had gotten in a scuffle and Lilly was stabbed in the arm.

Lilly said all he knew of the suspect was his name but he said the two men were stopped earlier in the day by another...

The incident began when a police officer for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe noticed a vehicle traveling on Interstate 40 about 8 pm, driving all over the roadway.

The officer, Clayton Martinez, said he got behind the vehicle, turned on his sirens and lights and attempted to do a traffic stop but the driver kept on going. It was at that point he contacted Metro Dispatch and asked for assistance from the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Lorenzo Guerrero found the vehicle and Martinez stopped near the off ramp at mile marker 61 and talked to the driver, Zane Yazzie, 46, of Prewitt.
