Man arrested in bloody Walmart stabbing

In a twist of irony, a man that was a victim of a stabbing earlier this week, stabbed a man at Gallup Walmart June 5.

Gallup Police arrested Fernando Largo, 28, of Sundance, N.M. on one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of tampering with evidence.

McKinley County Sheriff Sgt. Tammy Houghtaling was given an alert to watch for a light blue Ford Escape that was traveling east on Highway 118 and was swerving all over the road and into incoming traffic lanes.

Houghtaling reached Highway 118 and traveled west before the Ford Escape passed her several minutes later. She turned around to pursue the vehicle as it swerved in traffic lanes on Highway 118 and then south on Highway 400, where it eventually stopped.

For unknown reasons, at least according to a police report, Latefa Hicks, 25, of Yah-Ta-Hey, N.M., went on a rampage at the Hacienda Motel, 2510 E. Highway 66.

Gallup Police Officer Alana Bradley responded to the scene shortly before 2 pm and spoke to victim Mario Casias, 46, who was staying in one of the rooms. He told police that as he sat on the bed in his room an object came hurtling through the window, which turned out to be a cinder block. He then witnessed Hicks pick up another block and throw it through the window.

A man is at a local hospital in stable condition this evening, recovering from a stab wound to the chest.

Shortly before 5 pm today, Gallup Police officers were dispatched to Second Street and Highway 66 in response to the unnamed male victim who was stabbed.

Officers arrived on scene and found a male victim bleeding from the chest, GPD spokesperson Lt. Erin Toadlena-Pablo stated, in a news release.

"Officers applied pressure to the victim’s chest while medical emergency services were in route," Toadlena-Pablo said. "The victim was able to communicate a description of the suspect to officers on scene before he was transported to local hospital."

The call came into Gallup Police shortly before 4:30 pm, to 1650 West Maloney Ave., in reference to a man who was bleeding profusely from his head.
