Gallup receives six finalist nominations in state Top HAT Awards

The City of Gallup announced Oct. 1 it received six finalist nominations for the New Mexico Hospitality Association’s annual Hospitality and Tourism Awards.

The Top HAT Awards celebrate those who have done exceptional work to elevate the travel, tourism and lodging industry in New Mexico. The Gallup finalist nominees include:

Best New Event Finalist: Best in Show Night 2017 sponsored by Emerald Tanner in partnership with Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial and gallupARTS/ART123 Gallery.

Best Print Campaign Finalist: 2018 Gallup Visitors Guide by the Gallup McKinley County Chamber of Commerce, the Gallup Journey, and the City of Gallup Tourism and Marketing Department.

24-year-old Riege weaves the womb experience

In a city of quaint, adobe-clad architecture, and museums and galleries galore, SITE Santa Fe stands out from the crowd. Open since 1995, the landmark contemporary art organization, broadly known for its distinct and interactive exhibitions, won the prestigious Jeff Harnar architecture award this spring for its striking and creative remodel.

So this is a big year for SITE, and it’s also a big year for Gallup native Eric-Paul Riege, who, like SITE Santa Fe, stands out in his own right as the youngest artist to exhibit in the museum’s 2018 biennial series, Sitelines.2018: Casa Tomada.

UNM-Gallup student named Udall Scholar

The University of New Mexico-Gallup recently announced that Cobin Willie, a level 2 nursing student, has been awarded the prestigious Udall Scholarship. Willie is the first UNM-Gallup student to have received this designation and is currently the only recipient from New Mexico for this academic year.

Willie, a member of the Navajo Nation from To’hajiilee, was selected from among 437 applicants representing 209 higher education institutions.

The scholarship program, sponsored by the Udall Foundation, pays tribute to Morris Udall and Stewart Udall who spent their careers working on initiatives that impacted Native American self-governance, healthcare and environmental issues.

TravelCenters of America holds a fun and music-filled day for truckers and customers

Like all of us who have traveled the highways and byways, pit stops are a much-welcomed relief, especially at places where the reception is warm. One pit stop that really shows its appreciation for its drivers and customers is TravelCenters of America at the west end of Gallup.

Sept. 22 was the Drivers/Customers Appreciation Day at the Gallup TA, located at 3404 West Highway 66 and Interstate 40.
