American adventures affect the world
“Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die”. This often repeated phrase celebrating the valor of the British Light Calvary in carrying out their orders, regardless of the nearly inevitable outcome is heard frequently by our soldiers, revised as “Ours is not to reason why….” I know I heard it when I was in...

Trump’s border wall will hurt dozens of animal species
More than 650 miles of barriers already exist along the border. These walls, fences and barriers cut through sensitive ecosystems, disrupt animal migration patterns, cause catastrophic flooding, and divide communities and tribal nations.
Congress has already approved more than $3 billion for border walls since Trump took office. But that wasn’t enough to satisfy Trump’s demands. Now, with the declaration of a national “emergency,” Trump is illegally attempting to funnel billions more to border wall construction in some of the country’s most sensitive and spectacular landscapes.

“Nearly 18% of New Mexico adults living with children reported that their children are not getting enough to eat because of the public health crisis and recession. This crisis is bigger than any in our lifetime, but the Republican proposal doesn’t meet the needs of our...

A perspective on the name change of the Washington Redskins
For more than 30 years I’ve watched from the sidelines as the controversy over Native American team names has evolved. Not decidedly in favor or opposed, I haven’t felt hugely impacted by names, logos, mascots, and other Native American imagery in professional and college sports. As a Pueblo person from New Mexico, I’ve prioritized social and political concerns that in my view more directly impact contemporary Native people. However, I also have Midwestern roots.
