GMCS opens an internship program to seniors

Gallup-McKinley County Schools has found another way to try and prepare its students for their future. This school year was the first year of the Career Pathways Internship program.

The school district has been working with Pathways for some time. The seven pathways that the internships revolved around this year entail art, business, education, health sciences, human services, information technology, and transportation. Only seniors can participate in the internships.

Sea level rise is accelerating along the U.S. coast and is expected to bring an additional hike of up to 12 inches by 2050, according to a new NOAA study. That will double the amount of sea level rise that has already occurred over the past century. Such a rise would threaten cities such as Miami, Boston and New York, where flooding is already occurring during the highest astronomical and storm-surge tides. While the amount of rise will vary from location to location, the new data is a blinking “code red” for the deepening climate emergency, said Gina McCarthy, NOAA’s National Climate Advisor.

Navajo author Farina King to share insight on new book

Rehoboth, N.M. – Rehoboth Christian School is hosting a book talk for the community by author

Dr. Farina King at 7 pm March 3, at the Rehoboth High School.

King is a co-author and will be speaking about their most recent book entitled “Returning Home:
Diné Creative Works from the Intermountain Indian School.”

Returning Home examines Diné (Navajo) boarding school students at the Intermountain Indian
School, which at one time was the largest federal Indian boarding school. The school was located in Brigham City, UT, and in existence from 1950 to 1984.

It was supposed to be the start of a new life. Instead, a tragic accident ended one life and forever changed another.

Roommates Jesse Root, 21, and Faith Corcoran, 18, set out from California Feb. 8 on a cross-country move. They had lived together on Root’s grandmother’s ranch until she sold it.

The pair were bound for Indiana, where they would move in with Root’s grandfather, who has dementia, to care for him. They packed Root’s 2001 Ford Expedition with their pets and whatever necessities they could fit, then set off to their new home Feb. 8.
