Parents should always be concerned about ‘their kids’

E-mail Print PDF
It is often difficult to distinguish between normal parental concern for our kids and the almost paranoid attachment some have for their offspring. I have three children, and find myself wavering across that line in both directions, all the time. It is ‘normal’ to be concerned about those we bring into or raise in this...

Down to the last two area basketball teams at state

It’s always a sad or happy occasion for fans following the state tournament results in Albuquerque.

The sad news came yesterday (today is Thursday, Mar. 10 as this story is written) when the Bengal boys lost to neighboring Grants, 59-39, to end their season. The Gallup and Tohatchi girls’ teams continue to advance to brighten up the day.

The Bengal Ladies handled St. Pius easily, 64-37, and then squeaked past Piedra Vista, 66-63 while the Tohatchi Ladies disposed of Dulce, 70-46, and Laguna Acoma, 52-45. Now the competition gets tougher for both as Gallup faces #4 Espanola Valley and Tohatchi goes against #1 Texico in their attempts to play in the Championship...

Stars and Stripes teach junior wrestlers

I love to watch young kids having fun learning a sport, and Feb. 23 I was able to attend a practice of the Stars & Stripes Wrestling Club practicing at Miyamura High School. This club is for all kids from age five to 15 by Sept. 1, as long as the older ones do not yet wrestle for high school.

The president of the club is Phillip Lopez, a two-time placer for Gallup High, fourth at 138 pounds in 1987 and Champion of the 145 pound class in 1988. Assisting him are VP Paul Gutierrez, Secretary Natasha Sellers, Treasurer Chewy Morales and board member Anthony Garcia.

“We had 52 to start the season (from Octobr to May) and we have about 35 now.” Lopez said. “Most of them will...

A Sold Out Crowd is Always a Good Sign

People all around the area are asking about the availability of tickets for the Rotary Scholarship Banquet that will feature ‘Mean Joe’ Greene on Feb. 11.

Although confirmation has not yet been made, word has it that all the advance tickets have been sold. Since that word is not confirmed, interested parties should contact a member of the Rotary for more information.

Sammy Chioda is in charge of this, as far as is known, but other Rotarians may know more about it.

It is always good when a local service club has an extremely good turnout for any event, especially when it involves students in the area.

Proceeds from the sales, and other fundraisers put on by these great men and...

Hasn’t January Been a Great Month?

E-mail Print PDF
I’ve enjoyed almost every minute of January, 2016. For one thing, it serves as a solid marker that I am entering another year of life. It is also a time of year to attempt to change some old patterns that are not beneficial and to bulk up on ones that are more positive.

I have noticed negativity encroaching on a fair number of people; mostly those who have little joy in their hearts. Also, there are some who will never be content, with anything.

Not me! I am happy to wait for the outcomes in State Tournament action, basketball or wrestling at this time of year. I suppose I should include swimming in that mix as well, but having received no response from the coaches at Gallup or...
