Toyota, Wyland Foundation to host special Ceremony Aug. 7

The city of Gallup will be honored in a special ceremony at 11:30 am Aug. 7, in front of the McKinley County Courthouse, 207 West Hill Ave., as one of five winning cities in the annual Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

The event will recognize the efforts of Gallup residents who pledged in April to reduce water use by 32 million gallons over the next year and make lifestyle changes to reduce harmful runoff into local waterways.

A presentation of the Navajo Treaty of 1868 was given at the El Morro Theatre, July 20, presented by the Miss Navajo Council, Inc., the Octavia Fellin Public Library, and support from numerous community volunteers.

A short documentary was shown on the Treaty of 1868, establishing the “Navajo Indian Reservation.” In 1868, the Navajo became the only native nation to use a treaty to escape removal and return to their home.

This treaty was written on paper taken from an army ledger book where article two is the crucial portion that defines the Navajo reservation.

12th annual Gurley Motor Co. Route 66 Car, Truck & Street Rod Show wheels into Gallup

The 12th Annual Gurley Motor Co. Route 66 Car, Truck & Street Rod Show will wheel and fly its way into Gallup, July 27-29. Balloons will undergo mass ascensions in and around Gallup Friday through Sunday  mornings.

Gurley Motor Company will be hosting two cruise nights with Friday evening being the first. The participants will meet at the Gallup Chamber of Commerce parking lot for a cookout for the participants, hosted by the Chamber. At 7 pm, Gallup Police Department will chaperon on the cruise (parade) through the downtown area, according to Gurley Motor Company’s website.

Entry fees raises funds for hospital equipment

Rehoboth McKinley Christian Healthcare Services and the Western Health Foundation invites Gallup and residents from across New Mexico to participate in the sloppiest and dirtiest mud race ever witnessed at the 3rd Annual Adventure Mud Run July 28, at the Gallup OHV Motocross Park on Hasler Valley Road in Gallup.

The race will feature 30 obstacles across the mud, dirt and water, challenging participants in their attempts to crawl, climb and swing across a 5k or 10k obstacle course. All female band wows audience with their ‘Rez-Style/Surf’ beat

Three indigenous women rooted in the Navajo Nation and Pueblo of Laguna performed in Gallup after Arts Crawl at the Silver Stallion July 14. The trio sat down for an interview with the Sun prior to their evening show at the fledgling bike repair shop.
